ParticipantThe difference between the two lies in the fact that individuals are generally never exactly the same in their attitudes, thought patterns, beliefs, experiences and behaviours. That being said, the way I would want to be treated in a situation may not necessarily be what another person needs or wants- though said situation may be similar and/or familiar. The focus ought to be on what understanding and meeting the needs of the individual, as opposed to inserting oneself in the scenario and deciding what the response should be “if it were me”. While empathy is important, proper thought and understanding are of greater significance before articulating a response.

ParticipantI find your incorporation of technology to communicate with Maya interesting. It shows awareness of the tools commonly utilized by teenagers, as well as an understanding of the importance of reaching Maya within a comfort zone. This would more likely encourage her to communicate.

ParticipantAs an adult supporting Maya, my first step would be to carefully document reports and observations made by the people who interact with her on a regular basis. Once this is done and analysed, and after seeking the permission of the parent, I would ask Maya if she is willing to have a casual conversation- one in which she could choose the topic(s) and steer the dialog. If she agrees, I will ask her parent to suggest a relaxing environment in which we could meet (with the parent in close proximity). I would ask Maya to tell me one important thing about herself that she believes no one understands, but she wishes they did. Furthermore, I would actively try to avoid making any statements or asking any questions which could possibly be interpreted as being judgemental. I would approach the situation this way because in Unit 1 I learned that individuals with good mental health ought to be able to recognize, express and manage their emotions. I believe Maya should be given the opportunity to do so in a safe and comfortable environment.
